Acceleration Pipeline Workshops

In this five-part workshop series, research staff and students learned how to bring their business ideas to market, culminating in a pitching event. The series ran from 18-31 January 2012.

Attendees learned to:

  • evaluate the commercial potential of your idea;
  • identify relevant competitors and how to differentiate yourself;
  • identify and prioritise your potential customers; and
  • build and articulate a compelling business proposition.

This series was delivered by LAUNCH.ed and the Institute for Academic Development, and was open to any PhD student or member of research staff looking to commercialise some aspect of their research, or to explore the potential of another business idea.

The programme used models from the "So what? Who cares? Why You?  (TM)Inventor's Commercialisation Toolkit" by Wendy Kennedy, and participants will be provided with a copy of this book for the duration of the course.

The culmination of the course saw six University of Edinburgh PhD or masters students, from all over the world,  deliver a five-minute investor pitch on business ideas on 28 March. The ideas included treating drug dependency and improving composting.
