British Innovation Gateway Awards, Open Innovation Challenge, Briefing/Pre Session

On 21 March 2012, UCL in partnership with Capital Enterprise and CISCO, offered an opportunity for entrepreneurs and students to try out the latest proven business techniques on how to create and transform ideas into winning business innovations. Through the workshop and team exercises, the partners demonstrated how to use 'Open Innovation' techniques to enter and win £200,000 in the CISCO British Innovation Gateway (BIG) awards.

The BIG Awards aimed to recognise and support up-and-coming innovators and early-stage start-up businesses. They have been set up to attract high-potential technology start-ups that are seeking investment and support to accelerate their development.  Succesful entrants will have access to the full range of CISCO capabilities from technology to business development, plus potential investment and partnering opportunities in the future.

Submissions for the BIG Awards were accepted up to 31 March 2012.

  • The 5 idea categories were: Big Data, Collaboration, Future Cities, Internet of Things, and, mobility.
  • The challenge is run in three phases; 20 ideas will be picked for the semi finals, 6 ideas will proceed to the finals and 3 ideas will receive grand prizes.
